Practicing Gratitude This Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, homes across our community will be filled with laughter, family, and the delicious smells of holiday meals. While the holiday has long celebrated togetherness, it’s also a time to reflect and give thanks for all the gifts in our lives. At CAPTAIN Community Human Services, we know that gratitude is about more than saying “thank you”—it’s about showing appreciation through actions and giving back.

Here are some ways you can share gratitude this Thanksgiving season:

1. Make a list—and share it.

Take a moment to list the things you are thankful for—big and small. From a warm home to a reliable meal, reflection helps us see the blessings in our lives. Share your list with family or friends, and encourage others to do the same. Around the Thanksgiving table, consider inviting everyone to share one thing they’re grateful for—it’s a simple way to connect and reflect together.

2. Write a letter.

If someone has made a difference in your life—a mentor, friend, or relative—take the time to write them a handwritten note or letter expressing your gratitude. Thoughtful words can brighten someone’s day and make them feel valued.

3. Give a gift of thanks.

You don’t have to wait for winter holidays to give. Show appreciation to someone in your life with a small gift, a handwritten note, or a homemade treat. Simple, heartfelt gestures go a long way in expressing your gratitude.

4. Celebrate those you appreciate.

Consider holding a mini “gratitude ceremony” with family or friends. Recognize acts of kindness, hard work, or thoughtfulness with fun, lighthearted awards. It’s a creative way to honor the people who make your life richer.

5. Give back to your community.

Many families in our community face challenges that make Thanksgiving difficult. One of the most meaningful ways to show gratitude is by helping others. You can donate food, volunteer, or provide a meal for a family in need through CAPTAIN CHS programs. By giving back, you help ensure that everyone in our community can experience the warmth, joy, and connection of the holiday season.

This Thanksgiving, reflect on your blessings, express your appreciation, and find ways to give back. By supporting CAPTAIN Community Human Services, you can turn gratitude into action and help strengthen the lives of children, families, and seniors throughout our community.
