Where Do You Go When Home Isn’t Safe?

Homeless Youth

When 16-year-old Jay started bringing his backpack everywhere he went, his friends thought it was just for school.

Inside were a few changes of clothes, his phone charger, and the most important things he didn’t want to lose... because Jay didn’t know where he would be sleeping from one night to the next.

Sometimes he stayed with friends. Sometimes with extended family. Sometimes he didn’t know until the last minute.

Jay wasn’t living on the street. He was still going to school most days. From the outside, it might not have looked like he was homeless at all.

But he was.

Youth homelessness often looks different than people expect. Many young people who are experiencing housing instability are couch-surfing, staying temporarily with others, or remaining in unsafe or unstable environments because they have nowhere else to go.

Through CAPTAIN Community Human Services’ Runaway & Homeless Youth Programs, Jay was able to connect with a caring advocate who helped him navigate his options and access the support he needed to stay safe and continue his education.

But his story is far from unique.

Homelessness Doesn’t Always Mean the Streets

Across our community, young people may experience homelessness for a wide range of reasons:

  • Family conflict

  • Abuse or neglect

  • Economic hardship

  • Loss of housing

  • Aging out of foster care

  • Mental health challenges

Without safe and stable housing, youth face increased risks of exploitation, interrupted education, and long-term instability.

And because their situations may be hidden, moving from couch to couch or staying in unsafe environments, they often go unnoticed and unsupported.

A Continuum of Care for Vulnerable Youth

At CAPTAIN CHS, our Runaway & Homeless Youth (RHY) programs provide a continuum of services designed to meet young people where they are and help them move toward safety and stability.

Outreach and prevention services help youth connect with trusted adults before a crisis escalates.

Our Runaway & Homeless Youth Shelter offers a safe place to stay for young people who cannot safely remain at home.

And our Supportive Housing for Homeless Youth transitional living program provides longer-term support, helping youth build the life skills, education, and employment pathways they need to live independently.

Through our Street Outreach Program, trained advocates connect directly with youth in the community, building trust, providing basic necessities, and helping young people access safe housing and supportive services before a crisis escalates.

For young people who have experienced or are at risk of exploitation, Safe Harbour offers trauma-informed support, helping them navigate complex systems and access the resources they need to begin healing and rebuilding stability.

Each step is designed not only to address immediate needs, like housing and safety, but to help young people stay connected to school, employment opportunities, and positive support systems.

Your Support Helps Young People Find Stability

At CAPTAIN CHS, we believe in lifting people up and building brighter futures, especially for young people navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges.

Support from neighbors like you helps ensure that youth experiencing homelessness have access to safe housing, caring advocates, and the tools they need to move forward with confidence.

Because when a young person has a safe place to sleep, they are better able to focus on school, maintain employment, and build the skills necessary for long-term stability.

Your generosity helps ensure that a temporary crisis doesn’t become a lifelong barrier.

And most importantly, it reminds young people like Jay that they are not alone and that a brighter future is within reach.
