5 Altruistic Actions for the Holiday Season

With Thanksgiving just around the corner and December celebrations like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas soon to follow, the holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and reflection. But for some in our community, the holidays can be a challenging time—balancing cold winter months with the financial strain of providing meals and gifts can make the season feel burdensome rather than joyful.

CAPTAIN CHS invites you to help spread holiday cheer this season. Here are five ways you can make a meaningful impact in our local community:

1. Support local food programs.

Many families struggle to provide a holiday meal. CAPTAIN CHS runs food pantries and programs to ensure children, families, and seniors have access to nutritious meals during Thanksgiving and the winter months. You can help by donating food, contributing to holiday meal programs, or volunteering to serve meals to those in need.

2. Donate gifts and winter clothing.

Winter can be harsh, especially for families who lack warm clothing or holiday gifts. By donating toys, gifts, or gently used coats, hats, and gloves to CAPTAIN CHS, you help children and families stay warm and feel the joy of the season. Your contribution can make a world of difference.

3. Volunteer your time.

From helping at food pantries to assisting with youth or senior programs, your time is a gift that makes a direct impact. Volunteering at CAPTAIN CHS helps ensure that every member of our community can experience warmth, support, and connection this holiday season.

4. Reach out to those who can’t be home.

Some individuals—whether in shelters, seniors in care facilities, or military members stationed far away—may spend the holidays away from family. You can brighten their season by donating care packages, volunteering, or simply showing kindness and connection to those who need it most.

5. Give financially.

Financial donations allow CAPTAIN CHS to provide housing, food, and essential services year-round. Even a small gift can help a family celebrate the holidays with dignity and hope. Regular or one-time contributions help ensure that our programs can continue to serve the community effectively.

This holiday season, you can make it truly wonderful for everyone. By volunteering, donating, or giving financially to CAPTAIN Community Human Services, you help bring warmth, joy, and support to children, families, and seniors throughout our community.
